Florence has a telephone booking service for tickets to the Uffizi (Firenze Musei. Although intended as a means to avoid those long entrance lines, these days the lines to pick up tickets (if you can even get through) are just as long. So unless you’re intending to see absolutely everything (in which case you should arrive at the crack of dawn in peak tourist season), it’s best to arrive late in the day when the lines have started to dwindle and the interior is at its quietest. Limit yourself to one gallery, one school or one artist if you want to exit with your calm still intact. There are works here from not only the Florentine and Tuscan school, but from movements all over Italy and Europe – and that’s not to mention the Roman sculptures in the museum corridors. If there’s something you particularly wish to see, check in advance to make sure the room is open; they are sometimes closed.
The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday, 8.15am to 6.50pm.
